Compare NEMO's Helio and Helio LX portable pressure showers. Learn which camp shower fits your backpacking style, trip length, and hygiene needs.
Quick answer
For most backpackers, the NEMO Helio Portable Pressure Shower offers the best balance of weight and capacity, while the Helio LX suits those who want longer spray time and a larger water reserve.
Why pump-powered showers beat gravity bags
Gravity showers need to be hung from a tree or pole, which can be tricky above treeline or in open campsites. Pump-powered models like the NEMO Helio and Helio LX let you place the shower on the ground and pump with your foot, so you can rinse off anywhere without finding a high anchor point.
The steady pressure from a foot pump also means a more consistent spray than most gravity systems, which often slow down as the water level drops. This makes rinsing sandy feet, muddy gear, or sticky hands quicker and more efficient.
Water capacity: 2.9 gallons vs 5.8 gallons
The main difference between the Helio and Helio LX is water capacity. The Helio holds 2.9 gallons, while the Helio LX holds 5.8 gallons. That extra water nearly doubles your spray time, but it also adds weight and bulk to your pack.
Think about how you'll use the shower: a quick rinse after a day hike needs less water than a full-body wash for a multi-day basecamp trip. If you're carrying the shower on your back for miles, the smaller Helio is easier to manage; if you're setting up a basecamp or car camping, the larger LX might be worth the extra weight.
Spray time and pump effort
The Helio provides 5–7 minutes of continuous spray, while the Helio LX extends that to 7–10 minutes. That difference can matter for a thorough rinse or for washing multiple people.
Because the Helio LX holds more water, you'll need to pump more to maintain pressure, but the foot pump design makes it less tiring than hand-pumping. Both models let you pump as you go, so you can control the flow and conserve water when needed.
Decision rules for choosing your camp shower
- Trip length: If you're backpacking for 1–2 nights and only need a quick rinse, choose the Helio (2.9 gallons). For longer trips or basecamp stays, the Helio LX (5.8 gallons) reduces the need to refill. Match water capacity to the number of days and people you need to wash.
- Weight and packability: If you're carrying the shower in your pack, the Helio is lighter and less bulky. If you're driving to camp or setting up a basecamp, the extra weight of the Helio LX is less of a concern. Weigh the convenience of more water against the burden of carrying it.
- Spray time: If you need a full-body wash or want to rinse off multiple people, the Helio LX's 7–10 minutes of spray time is more comfortable. For a quick rinse of feet or gear, the Helio's 5–7 minutes is plenty. Consider how many people will use the shower before choosing a model.
