Learn how to set up the Heliopolis Privacy Shelter for camp showers, including tips for pairing with a Helio shower and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Set up the Heliopolis Privacy Shelter by choosing a level spot, assembling the poles, attaching the shower hose, and securing the shelter. Avoid common mistakes like skipping the guy lines or not locking the door.

Why the Heliopolis works well for camp showers

The Heliopolis Privacy Shelter is designed specifically to pair with the Helio or Helio LX portable shower, creating a private space for showering or changing. Its built-in hose attachments let you run the Helio sprayer through the shelter wall for hands-free use.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Choose a level, clear spot: Find a flat area free of rocks and roots. The Heliopolis needs about a 4×4 ft footprint. Avoid low spots where water might pool. A slope causes the shower water to run toward one wall, which can soak the floor.
  2. Assemble the poles and insert them into the corner sleeves: The shelter uses two long fiberglass poles that cross at the top. Slide each pole through the continuous sleeve on the corresponding side, then insert the ends into the grommets at the base corners. Don't force a bent pole into a sleeve—check that the pole sections are fully seated first.
  3. Attach the shower hose to the Helio shower: The Heliopolis has a dedicated hose port near the top of one wall. Feed the Helio sprayer hose through the port and connect it to the sprayer head. The hose clip inside keeps the sprayer in place. Route the hose before raising the shelter fully—it's much easier when the fabric is slack.
  4. Raise the shelter and secure the guy lines: Lift the center hub until the poles are under tension. Stake down the four corner loops, then attach the two guy lines to the top of the shelter and stake them out at a 45° angle. Skipping the guy lines in wind can cause the shelter to collapse or blow away.
  5. Lock the door and hang the towel pocket: Zip the door closed and engage the interior lock. Hang the overhead towel pocket inside, and place the dry bag in the built-in dispenser pocket for toilet paper. The door lock is a simple toggle—test it before you step in to shower.
